Private, Bespoke Photo Safaris in Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is the largest intact ecosystem remaining in the continental United States—and the only place where the full community of wildlife exists as it did 11,000 years ago. This is a legendary region defined by the geysers and hot springs of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, alpine peaks that rival the Swiss Alps, and the breathtaking mountain light that makes Yellowstone a bucket list destination for photographers the world over.
Yellowstone is no petting zoo. This is 22 million acres of rugged wilderness where humans are only visitors, and it’s the backyard for the wolves, grizzlies, bison, and other wildlife who call it home. It’s easy to spend days driving endlessly and come up empty. We’ve all done it.
But we can help you avoid that. We know the parks and surrounding region intimately and have been leading private photo safaris here for over 15 years.
Why Our Photo Safaris Are Different
We don’t offer generic national park tours. Each photo safari starts with you, and is custom-built around your goals by an award-winning, local nature photographer. From bison at first light, wolves in Lamar Valley, thermal features in winter fog, or alpine landscapes under summer storms, we meet you where you are: your skill level, your gear, and your vision. No fixed itineraries. No group drama. No waiting for twelve people to get the same shot. Just expert guidance and the kind of local knowledge that makes the difference between getting the shot or going home empty. We chase the light, read the wildlife, and position you to make the images you came here to make.
Our guests consistently award these photo safaris 5-star reviews, describing them as ‘unforgettable,’ ‘the best decision we made for our Yellowstone visit,’ and ‘Definitely 5 Stars!’—many of our guests engage us for multiple days and return year after year.

What to Expect
Seasonal Road Closures
May – October: Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton are fully accessible (unless closed for severe weather).
November – April: Winter road closures in Yellowstone limit our driving options to the northern range, Lamar Valley, and northeast entrance road to Cooke City, Montana. Grand Teton also experiences seasonal road closures, with winter access available only as a custom experience (call for pricing). All photo safaris require appropriate clothing and personal gear for the season.
Before Coming to Yellowstone – The Adventure Starts At Home!
Once you’ve booked your dates, we’ll work with you to design the best possible experience. First, we’ll send you a brief planning questionnaire to understand your equipment, experience level, and goals. Then we’ll schedule a phone call to discuss your interests in detail and answer any questions you have for us. Based on your responses and typical conditions for the time of your visit, we’ll create a draft schedule and working plan—one that remains flexible and can adapt to weather, wildlife activity, or your changing priorities.
If you’d like we can also help with:
- Lodging recommendations in the parks or the gateway communities surrounding them
- Dining suggestions for the areas you’ll be visiting
- Scheduling your visit for specific subjects or seasonal events
- Resources (websites, podcasts, books, maps) to help you prepare and answer basic photography questions
- Other activities and locations in the Greater Yellowstone area that might be of interest—just ask!

We’ll discuss timing in advance but remain flexible as opportunities develop. Breaks, meals, and comfort stops happen as needed—this is your photo safari, not a forced march. You tell us if you need a later start time or a specific time you need to be back at your lodging.

Preparing for Your Visit
Weather & Local Conditions
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem sits in the northern Rocky Mountains, where weather conditions can be extreme and unpredictable. Summer temperatures range from over 100°F down to the 20s, and winter temperatures range from +50°F to -40°F. Elevations throughout the parks range from 5,700 to 9,000+ feet above sea level, where the sun’s intensity is significantly higher than at lower elevations—sunscreen and quality sunglasses are essential year-round.
Yellowstone lies in an arid region due to the rain shadow created by the surrounding mountain ranges. Remember to hydrate, even when you don’t feel thirsty. The terrain is rocky and rugged; pack sturdy, broken-in footwear appropriate to the season.
What to Pack
Pack appropriate clothing for the season you’ll be visiting, keeping in mind that conditions can shift dramatically within a single day. Think layers. For detailed, season-specific packing advice:

Seasonal Wildlife & Conditions
Important: Yellowstone weather is famously unpredictable. The rule is, ”Exceptions are the rule”—be prepared for anything!
Spring (April – Early June)
Wildlife: Ice-out season brings early wildflowers while snow remains at high altitudes and north-facing slopes. Newborn bison, elk, wolf, and bear cubs. Grizzlies active at lower elevations. Wolves around their dens (whether we see them is beyond our control).
Conditions: Unpredictable weather—snow, rain, sun, sometimes all in one day. All major park roads open by mid-May but may close temporarily due to snow.
Summer (Late June – August)
Wildlife: Bears move to high country. Elk calves and pronghorn fawns. Bison rut generally late July into August. Moose in marshy areas. Wolf activity continues park-wide.
Landscapes: Wildflower peak. High-country access fully open.
Conditions: Warm days, cool mornings and evenings. Afternoon thunderstorms common.
Fall (September – October)
Wildlife: Elk rut (bugling bulls, dramatic behavior). Animals preparing for winter. Bears fattening for hibernation.
Landscapes: Golden aspens, dramatic light, crisp air.
Conditions: Cool to cold mornings; days can still be hot. First significant snows arrive sometime in this period.
Winter (November – March)
Wildlife: Bison in thermal areas (iconic winter scenes). Best time for wolves: January-March! Wolves can be very active and visible at close range in Lamar Valley. Coyotes, bighorn sheep, and elk on northern range.
Landscapes: Thermal features in freezing air create dramatic steam. Snow-covered landscapes.
Conditions: COLD. Temperatures range from -40°F to 60°F. Roads limited to northern range and Lamar Valley. Grand Teton inaccessible from Yellowstone by car (custom arrangements possible if made well in advance of your arrival).
